A transfer credit may be granted when a course from another accredited institution is deemed equivalent to a course in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education or the Faculty of Arts & Science.
All Bachelor of Kinesiology students are required to complete 20.0 full course credits (FCE) to obtain their degree and up to 9.0 transfer credits can count toward those 20.0 FCEs. Students who have completed a University degree elsewhere can only transfer a maximum of 5.0 credits from that degree.
There are four ways to receive transfer credits toward your degree in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education:
- Newly admitted student who has completed secondary school curricula such as AP or IB (High School Transfer Credits)
- Newly admitted student who has completed courses at another post-secondary institution (On Admission Transfer Credits)
- Current Bachelor of Kinesiology student who is seeking approval to take a course at another post-secondary institution (Letter of Permission)
- Current Bachelor of Kinesiology student going on an exchange via the Centre for International Education (Learning Abroad)

University and College Transfer Credits (Newly Admitted Students)
Transfer credits are assessed after admission. If you have completed post-secondary studies that might qualify for credit, your offer of admission will include instructions on completing an online transfer credit assessment application.
You will be notified of any transfer credits to which you are entitled soon after we receive your completed transfer credit application.
STEP 1: ACCEPT YOUR OFFER OF ADMISSION
Head to the JOIN U of T portal to accept your offer of admission.
STEP 2: PAYMENT
There is a $32.50 fee to have your transfer credit application evaluated.
Head to the Customer and Membership Services Main Office on the first floor of the Athletic Centre (55 Harbord St.) to make your payment.
Clearly state you are paying for a Transfer Credit Application & Assessment ($32.50). You will receive an email with your proof of payment.
If you are unable to pay in-person, please email undergrad.kpe@utoronto.ca for a virtual payment option.
STEP 3: APPLY FOR A TRANSFER CREDIT & UPLOAD YOUR PROOF OF PAYMENT
Log into the JOIN U of T portal and access the transfer credit application via a link in the “Admissions Checklist” section of the Application Status page.
Apply for transfer credit no later than your deadline to accept your admission offer.
- Since your completed transfer credit assessment will inform your course enrolment in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, we recommend that you submit an application and all supporting documents as soon as you receive an admission offer.
- Transfer credit applications received after May 15 may not be processed by your course enrolment date. The university reserves the right to restrict your enrolment if you do not submit the transfer credit application.
- If you received an offer after May 15, submit your application as soon as possible and no later than the date to accept your offer of admission.
Upload proof of payment on the JOIN U of T portal.
- Your transfer credit application won’t be processed until proof of payment is uploaded
- This payment must come from the membership office as opposed to paying directly on ACORN (see steps above).
Input all course information as reflected on your post-secondary transcript(s). This includes course codes, course titles, and final grades.
- Include all courses in progress and courses you plan on taking before starting in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education for a provisional assessment.
Only studies reported at admission are eligible for transfer credit.
- If you are completing summer courses at an institution not previously reported on your admission application, it will be necessary to edit your OUAC application to add the institution. You will be able to add courses to your transfer credit application only after completing this step.
Upload course outlines and/or syllabi to your application.
- All course outlines and/or syllabi must be uploaded when submitting your transfer credit application, including in-progress courses.
- Files containing course outlines and/or syllabi should be attached as PDF or Word documents, one file per course, to include the institution and course name in the file name (e.g., McMaster Univ – ENG100H).
- The course outlines and/or syllabi should match the term and year that you completed the course.
- An official English translation must accompany course outlines and/or syllabi issued in a language other than English or French.
- Detailed syllabi should include (but is not limited to): institution name; course code, name and title; length of course (number of hours and number of credits), week-to-week topic breakdown, textbook information, reading list, course evaluation, lab component (if applicable) and tutorial hours (if applicable). Upon review, you may be required to submit additional information or details.
- If you do not have a copy of a course outline and/or syllabi, contact your previous institution(s) to request a copy. Failure to provide detailed course outlines and/or syllabi will delay processing your transfer credit request and may also lead to restrictions on your enrolment.
- Provide the associated course links in the academic calendar of your prior institution(s) in the space provided.
Once all course information and syllabi have been added, submit the application and pay the associated fee for the application to be reviewed.
- The transfer credit application fee is non-refundable.
Step 4: Final Assessment Results are Communicated
To monitor your transfer credit assessment log in to the JOIN U of T portal.
Once a transfer credit assessment (provisional or final) is available on your JOIN U of T, please save a copy for your own records. Any updates to the assessment will supersede prior versions of the assessment.
The application will be in progress and the transfer credit assessment not considered complete, until receipt of your official final transcripts reflecting your final grade(s) including any no credit, dropped, withdrawn, failed grades, etc.
If a transfer credit has been approved, you will see this reflected within 24 hours on your ACORN academic history and degree explorer.
If you have any questions about understanding your ACORN academic history and/or how to use degree explorer, please book an appointment with an Academic Advisor.
Transfer Credit Eligibility Criteria
- Transfer credit may be granted when a course from another recognized post-secondary institution is equivalent to a course in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education.
- Transfer credits are granted for undergraduate-level academic courses and are not granted for practical, clinical, pedagogical or graduate-level courses.
- Courses, including courses that are part of international summer programs, offered through third-party affiliations on behalf of host universities will not be eligible for transfer credit.
- Transfer credit is awarded for courses in which your final grade is at least one full grade higher than the minimum passing grade at your previous institution and comparable to a C- or 60% at the University of Toronto. We do not consider courses graded on a pass/fail system (instead of a final grade) for transfer credit.
- Grades or Grade Point Averages are not transferred to your academic record at the University of Toronto and are not included in your Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education grade point average.
- Incoming students are advised not to enrol in summer courses outside of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education prior to beginning their studies in the fall. Summer courses at an institution not previously reported on your admission application will not be reviewed for transfer credit.
- Once approved, to refuse a transfer credit awarded from previous post-secondary studies you must meet with an academic advisor for consideration.
University
If you are applying from another recognized university you may qualify for transfer credit, provided the content of your courses is considered appropriate for your intended degree program.
For the Bachelor of Kinesiology program, students can be granted a maximum of 9.0 full-course transfer credits. You can check which of your courses might transfer to U of T through the Transfer Explorer.
You will be notified of any transfer credits to which you are entitled soon after we receive your completed transfer credit application.
Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology
If you have completed a three-year diploma or a four-year Applied Degree at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology or Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, you may be eligible for a maximum of 5.0 transfer credits.
You will be notified of any transfer credits to which you are entitled soon after we receive your completed transfer credit application.
Quebec CEGEP
If you are admitted from the CEGEP system, you may be eligible to receive transfer credits. The maximum number of transfer credits you are eligible for is based on how many CEGEP academic courses you completed.
Transfer credit is assessed after admission. If you have completed post-secondary studies that might qualify for credit, your offer of admission will include instructions on completing an online transfer credit assessment application.
Second Degree
If you're interested in pursuing a second undergraduate degree, you must apply to a different program of study at the university than the one in which you completed your first degree.
A maximum of 5.0 transfer credits may be granted towards a second degree.
We advise prospective students to consider whether a second degree is actually required for their purposes. For example, a ‘make-up’ year as a non-degree student may satisfy admission requirements for a graduate or professional program in lieu of a second degree.
Letter of Permission to Take Courses at Another University (Current BKin Students)
Current students who wish to take a course outside of University of Toronto, must request a Letter of Permission.
Transfer credit will not be granted for courses that were not pre-approved by a Letter of Permission. Courses, including courses that are part of international summer programs, offered through third-party affiliations on behalf of host universities will not be eligible for transfer credit.
The deadlines to submit your application for a Letter of Permission and all required documents, including proof of payment, are:
| Session in which you will be taking courses at another recognized institution | Applications open | Application, proof of payment and documentation deadline |
| Fall (September- December) | May 15 | July 1 |
| Winter (January-April) | September 15 | November 1 |
| Summer (May-August) | January 15 | March 15 |
Follow these steps to apply for a Letter of Permission:
Step 1: Payment
There is a $42 fee to have your transfer credit application evaluated for up to 2 courses. A fee of $21 applies for each additional course.
Assessment fees are non-refundable.
Head to the Customer and Membership Services Main Office on the first floor of the Athletic Centre (55 Harbord St.) to make your payment.
Clearly state you are paying for a Letter of Permission ($42). You will receive an email with your proof of payment.
If you are unable to pay in-person, please email undergrad.kpe@utoronto.ca for a virtual payment option.
Step 2: complete the letter of permission application
Head to the Letter of Permission application.
Upload official course outlines and/or syllabi when submitting your transfer credit application:
- Files containing course outlines and/or syllabi should be uploaded as PDF documents (not screenshots), one file per course, to include the institution and course name in the file name (e.g., McMaster Univ – ENG100H)
- The course outlines and/or syllabi should match the term and year the course will be taken
- The course outlines must be provided to you directly from the university at which you will complete the courses
- An official English translation must accompany course outlines and/or syllabi issued in a language other than English or French
- Detailed syllabi should include (but not limited to) the institution name, course code name and title, length of course (number of hours and number of credits), week to week topic breakdown, textbook information and/or list of readings, assessment breakdown including number of essays, tests or exams, lab component (if applicable) and tutorial hours (if applicable). Upon review, you may be required to submit additional information or details.
- Contact the host institution(s) to request a copy. Failure to provide detailed course outlines and/or syllabi will result in delays in processing your transfer credit request and may also lead to cancelling your application.
- Provide the associated course links in the academic calendar of your host institution(s) in the space provided on the Letter of Permission application.
Your Letter of Permission cannot be finalized until you have submitted any course outlines that are required. The Letter of Permission may be cancelled if the course outlines do not include all the required information needed for assessment. There is no guarantee that a specific course will transfer until it is confirmed to be eligible for transfer credit in your Letter of Permission.
Step 3: Download your Letter of Permission
To monitor your Letter of Permission application updates, submit any additional required documents and review your transfer credit assessment, log in to the Letter of Permission portal.
Once a transfer credit assessment is available, please save a copy for your own records. Any updates to the assessment will supersede prior versions of the assessment.
Once finalized, your Letter of Permission will be available on the Letter of Permission application portal. Download a copy for future reference.
You are responsible for sending a copy of the Letter of Permission to the host university, if required. Keep in mind that providing a Letter of Permission does not guarantee that you will be able to enrol in the course(s) at the host university.
Step 4: Send the official transcript with your final grades to KPE
Once you have received final marks for the courses that you completed, arrange for the host university to send your official final electronic transcript directly to transfercredit.kpe@utoronto.ca.
Transfer credit will not be awarded if you fail to submit your final official transcripts no earlier than the completion of your course(s) and no later than one month following the completion of the term. When requesting your transcript from your host university, please include your first and last name and, if possible, your U of T student number.
Once your transfer credits are finalized, they will appear on the Letter of Permission portal and your academic record. Your transfer credits do not have any grades/marks associated with them. Your grade is used only to determine whether you are eligible for transfer credit. Your transfer credits therefore do not contribute to your grade point average (GPA) calculations.
If you have requested graduation, there are important deadlines for you to submit all required documentation and final transcripts. If you miss these deadlines you may need to postpone your graduation.
- Spring graduation: The deadline to submit final official transcripts is May 1.
- Fall graduation: The deadline to submit final official transcripts is September 30. Transcript copies issued to you will not be accepted. When requesting your transcript from your host university, please include your first and last name and, if possible, your U of T student number.
If your host university cannot provide an electronic final transcript, please contact transfercredit.kpe@utoronto.ca.
Upon receipt of the official transcript, the Letter of Permission is re-evaluated, and students are notified of the transfer credits they received. In some cases, the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education may require additional information in order to grant a Letter of Permission or to award credit upon completion of courses.
If you decide not to take the course you were given permission to take, please notify the Office of the Faculty Registrar at transfercredit.kpe@utoronto.ca. Without this notification, you will be restricted from applying for a Letter of Permission in the future.
