Understanding Figurative Language among University Students
Are you a postsecondary student? You’re invited to take part in a research study exploring how students understand figurative language (like idioms, metaphors, and sarcasm) and how this relates to memory, language background, and social experiences.
Who Can Participate?
- Current postsecondary students
- English Language Learners (ELLs – learned English after age 5)
- Native English speakers (EL1s)
- Comfortable completing tasks in English
What Will You Do?
- Complete a 60-minute online session
- Figurative language & reading comprehension tasks
- Vocabulary & memory activities
- Short questionnaires about your background, social experiences, and well-being (can be completed on your own time)
What’s in it for You?
- will be entered into a draw in which two participants will each win a $100 gift card
- Gain insight into your own language and learning skills
- Contribute to research supporting ELLs

Your responses are confidential and securely stored. No identifying information will be shared with instructors or university services.
