Policies - Certifications and Workshops

Requests for refunds must be made 4 days prior to the start of a course or full fee will apply.

Please note that certification courses may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.

All certification courses are designed for 100 per cent active participation! This includes in-water participation. Unsuccessful participants must re-take the entire course; candidates will not be provided the opportunity to be re-examined.

All participants must adhere to the Ministry of Health Regulations for Swimming Pools. Please no street shoes, glass or food and drink on the pool deck.

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills. Specific program content can be found on the Canadian Red Cross website.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age and one of: Emergency First Aid (or higher); Bronze Cross. Perform water safety skills and strokes to meet performance criteria of Red Cross Swim Kids level 10.

How do I enter the facility?
A Facility Access Pass (green pass) is required for entry to the building for courses that are longer than one day. This card can be picked up in the main office at the Athletic Centre before the first class.

For one day courses, please bring receipt of course registration to the equipment counter staff at the turnstiles so they can allow you access into the building.

What do I need to know/bring?

  • Remember to bring pen, paper and the required manual to the first class.
  • Manuals are included in course fee.
  • Bathing suit and extra towels.
  • All certification courses are designed for 100 per cent active participation! This includes in-water participation.
  • Please bring proof of all course prerequisites for the first day. All prerequisites must be met before the start of the course, and will be checked by the instructor.

What skills will be taught?
This course teaches and evaluate skills as set by the Canadian Red Cross for Water Safety Instructor (WSI).

All certification courses are pass/fail. Most classes include an exam date with an external examiner. We reserve the right to recommend that students not attempt the exam if they have not attended/participated fully or are not prepared for the exam for any reason.
