Researchers from the TEMPO lab ('Training and Enhancement of Motor Performance Outcomes') at the University of Toronto Faculty of Kinesiology are recruiting participants for a study looking at how the sense of touch changes when the finger presses a piano key. Participation will involve brief, weak electrical stimulations being applied to a fingertip touching a piano key. You will receive electrical stimulation with the fingertip at rest, before a key press, or during a key press, and will be asked to answer whether you feel the stimulation or not.

This is an in-person study that will take place in the Clara Benson Building of the Athletic Centre (55 Harbord Street), University of Toronto. Participants will be asked to attend a single session lasting approximately 1 hour 20 minutes.

Who can participate?

  1. 18-60 years old

  2. Right-handed

  3. No history of neurological or motor disorders

  4. Belonging to one of the following categories:

  • 3 years or less of musical training and/or experience over a lifetime; or
  • Current or former student in a post-secondary piano performance degree program

Participants will be compensated at a rate of $15/hr. If you are interested in taking part or have any questions, please contact Julia at kpe.tempolab@utoronto.ca
