Exercise During Pregnancy Study
You can help SickKids researchers determine the role of exercise during pregnancy on healthy blood flow to the baby.
Who can Participate:
- Women 25 to 35 years of age
- First, uncomplicated, single-baby pregnancy
- 1st or early 2nd trimester: up to 13 weeks of gestation
- Exercised prior to pregnancy
- Planning to continue exercising during pregnancy
- Anticipated delivery at Mount Sinai Hospital
- Non-smoker
Who can't participate
- Drastic change in physical activity during pregnancy
- Claustrophobia
- Implanted metal devices
- Metabolic or diabetic condition
- Gynaecological abnormalities
- Cardiovascular abnormalities or disorders in the mother or the fetus
- Regular use of medications that can affect cardiac or lung function, fetal development or metabolism
Participation in the study involves
- Completing lifestyle-related questionnaires
- Using a stationary bicycle for about 20 minutes, once in 2 and twice in 3 trimester
- Undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 3 trimester
- Allowing us to visit your newborn baby at Mount Sinai Hospital in order to measure her/his body weight, head and arm circumferences
