KPE’s Simon Darnell, associate professor and director of the Centre for Sport Policy Studies, recently appeared on the popular podcast CONNECT with Sarah Crosbie.

During the episode, Darnell shared insights on hockey’s powerful role in Canadian culture and the complex loyalties it inspires.

“It’s not just about local pride,” he said, “but also national pride. Hockey is seen as Canada’s game.” This creates a unique dynamic for fans, especially in provinces like Alberta and Ontario where multiple NHL teams compete for support.

Crosbie reflected on these tensions: “It’s fascinating to see how deeply hockey connects people to their communities, but also how it can put fans in difficult positions during playoffs when loyalties are tested.” She praised Darnell’s nuanced perspective on the emotional and cultural significance of hockey, especially in light of the 30-year Stanley Cup drought for Canadian teams.

Beyond the ice rink, Darnell discussed the broader social role of sport, including its potential to foster community and peacebuilding, alongside challenges such as accessibility, cost and player safety. Drawing from his own experience as a parent of a competitive hockey player, he highlighted the contradictions inherent in sport and the need for continued attention and reform.

Darnell emphasized the need to keep sports accessible and enjoyable for all children, whether they aim to compete at elite levels or simply want to have fun and stay active. This aligns closely with KPE’s commitment to promoting inclusive, healthy and positive sport experiences for all.
