Long-time U of T supporter and visionary business leader Larry Tanenbaum has been inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. Celebrated at a ceremony in Toronto on May 22, 2025, the honour recognizes Tanenbaum’s remarkable contributions to Canadian business, sport and philanthropy.

A proud University of Toronto alumnus, Tanenbaum has made a lasting impact on the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE) through his leadership and generosity. In 2022, he and his wife Judy made a transformational $20 million gift to launch the Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS)—an innovative partnership between U of T and Sinai Health.

TISS is helping to redefine the future of sport science. It brings together experts in kinesiology, clinical sport medicine and data science to study athlete performance, improve recovery and injury prevention and ensure sport is safe and inclusive for everyone—from high-performance athletes to weekend warriors and para-athletes.

With support from the Tanenbaums’ gift, TISS has already created new faculty positions, including a Chair in Sport Science and Data Modelling, and is funding cutting-edge research in areas like biomechanics, brain health and wearable technology. It’s also helping to turn research into action by working closely with organizations like Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and provincial sport partners.

Tanenbaum’s induction into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame highlights a lifetime of impact. Beyond his leadership as Chair of Kilmer Group and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, he’s long been a champion for health care and research—most notably through the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Sinai Health.

His support is helping to position U of T as a global leader in sport science and creating new opportunities for students, researchers and athletes alike.
