Longtime employee of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education Michelle Brownrigg will be recognized for her contributions to education at the 2017 Partners in Research National Awards in Ottawa on Monday, May 9, 2017.
Partners in Research National Awards in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Biomedicine honour excellence in Canadian research, as well as commitment to promoting the benefit of research through public outreach.
Brownrigg will be honoured with the Ronald G. Calhoun Science Ambassador Award, which recognizes a member of the lay community who has provided outstanding leadership over several years in support of health research. She is recognized for her many contributions to community and student-focused sport, recreation, health and wellness, particularly when she served as director of physical activity and equity in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and, before that, as CEO of Active Healthy Kids Canada. Brownrigg is currently the senior director of co-curricular education and chief programs officer at Hart House.
“My first thought upon learning of this prestigious recognition of Michelle’s work, was that it was a very enlightened choice by the selection committee. I knew of Michelle’s positive impact when she was CEO of Active Health Kids Canada and experienced it first hand when she joined KPE with senior managerial responsibilities for university wide physical activity programming,” says Professor Ira Jacobs, dean of KPE.
“Her initiatives that reinforce the linkages between student health and their co-curricular experience had a profound impact when she was with KPE and I have no doubt that it’s the same in her current position at Hart House. I am very proud that her U of T work has been part of what her award recognizes.”
