Update on academic planning for winter 2021 from Dean Ira Jacobs

20/11/2020

Dean Ira Jacobs shares updates on KPE's academic planning for winter 2021 in a message below.

With the end of the fall term approaching, I want to share with you some important information about the coming winter term, and also some thoughts about the past few months.

I have long known that the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education’s students, staff and faculty are engaged, enthusiastic, creative, and dynamic (some have described us collectively as “driven”). And, the last few months remind me of those traits daily as I witness the resilience displayed by our community in adjusting to the new academic landscape created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges that have arisen, we all have continued to bring our very best to teaching and learning, to research, and to providing excellent service to facilitate it all happening—all while balancing personal and co-curricular commitments. The pride I take in being a member of KPE has grown extraordinarily during this extraordinary academic year. And I know very well that KPE's collective hard work, dedication, and big hearts are the anchors for how we have been adapting over the last few months.

Earlier today, University of Toronto President Meric Gertler released an update to the University community announcing a January 11, 2021 start for winter term classes for undergraduate courses in first entry Faculties.

In light of this change, KPE will restart all undergraduate and graduate classes on January 11, 2021. It is our hope that the extra week will provide all KPE students, course instructors and staff with much needed time to both recuperate from an extraordinary fall and to prepare for the new academic term.

It is important to note that the total amount of class time will remain the same for KPE students. Reading Week will remain as scheduled, February 15 through 19, 2021. Classes will be extended by one week in the spring and the KPE exam period will be condensed to accommodate this. As a result, the final date for winter term courses will be April 9, 2021 and the examination period will end on April 30, 2021.

We remain committed to doing everything we can to support the wellness and academic success of our community as we head into the winter term, and hope that you continue to take advantage of the many opportunities to connect, learn and thrive at KPE.

Take care,

Ira Jacobs, DrMedSc, FCAHS
