Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning, the incumbent leads, directs, trains and works with a team of Strength & Conditioning Attendants in performing the scope of their duties.

 

This includes, but is not limited to providing prompt and professional customer service to members by conducting strength and conditioning orientations, assisting members with proper exercise techniques on all equipment, answering member queries and educating members on the established rights and responsibilities of all strength & conditioning facilities, and other facilities as required.

 

He/she must also clean equipment and carry out equipment safety inspections according to the schedule provided or as needed, promptly reporting any equipment requiring repair. The incumbent also ensures the smooth operation of the facility in the absence of the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning, and plays a pivotal role in visually monitoring members and facilities’ equipment usage to ensure that all user and staff policies and procedures are followed.

 

The incumbent takes the lead in addressing and documenting incidents and injuries when they arise. He/she will act as a role model and mentor to all staff and users in the facility. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring prompt opening and closing of the facility as per detailed procedures provided. He/she may also be responsible for other administrative tasks as directed by the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning.

 

 

Materials, Equipment & Outcomes

Equipment Used

Strength and conditioning equipment such as, but not limited to: free weights, weight training machines, Olympic weightlifting equipment & platforms and cardio machines.

 

Outcome/Consequence of Error

The incumbent has the responsibility for program and facility safety while on duty and must respond promptly and professionally with all members.

 

Failure to ensure that members comply with the rights and responsibilities could result in injury to members and legal action against the University.

 

Ineffective communication and unprofessionalism could result in poor customer and staff relations, complaints and/or reduced participation.

 

Poor member service could result in loss of business for the University.

 

Duties:

30% Customer Service

Assist members with proper exercise techniques as needed at all times.

 

Proactively educate members of the established rights and responsibilities of each facility.

 

Conduct strength and conditioning orientations for members.

 

Assist the Coordinator, Personal Training & Nutrition with the promotion of personal training and nutrition services.

 

Answer and/or direct member inquiries regarding programs and services appropriately.

 

Support and educate members regarding the Faculty’s goals of anti-racism and cultural diversity, women-only hours, sexual and gender diversity, and accessibility as it relates to strength and conditioning programming.

 

30% Equipment Care

Surface clean/dust strength and cardio equipment as well as carry out and document equipment safety checks according to schedule provided and established safety protocol.

 

Inform the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning of equipment requiring repair, place ‘out of service’ signs on faulty equipment and document in the equipment repair log book for further follow-up.

 

Ensure members use the equipment for its intended use and/or remove heavy weight plates following use when necessary.

 

Ensure spray bottles are filled with cleaning solution as per WHMIS training provided (Goldring only).

 

30% Facility Supervision

Visually monitor the facility to ensure that the maximum number of members do not exceed facility capacity.

 

Resolve conflict situations and seek support from the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning or other management personnel on duty as needed.

 

Follow established opening and closing procedures to ensure facility is secure at all times.

 

Document, using the established form and inform the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning of incidents and/or injuries.

 

Record statistics related to each SCC and associated programs.

 

10% Staff Supervision and Leadership, Office Administration and Support

Provide direct, on-the-job leadership and supervision of a team of Strength & Conditioning Attendants, direct work as required and report deficiencies in staff performance to the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning

 

Attend and/or lead staff orientations, in-service meetings and equity workshops as required.

 

Assist the Assistant Manager, Strength & Conditioning with the recruitment, orientation and training of casual staff.

 

Light administrative duties and support including, but not limited to preparing, printing and posting schedules and flyers; provide input and support to weekly communications.

 

Calibrate the BODPOD according to schedule provided.

 

Complete other administrative tasks as assigned.

 

Good working relationships and communication must be maintained with students, staff, as well as alumni, faculty and community members.

 

 

 

                                   

Challenges and Difficulties:

Nature of job requires flexible hours, evening and weekend work as scheduled; shifts will vary depending on the time and season of the year.

 

Must be comfortable with standing for entire duration of shift.

 

The strength and conditioning weight equipment ranges from a minimum of 5 pounds to 225 pounds and the incumbent must be comfortable with assisting and spotting members using weights and weight machines.

 

Must be comfortable with lifting a minimum of 5 pounds to demonstrate proper exercise execution to members.

 

Nature of the job requires repeated bending, twisting and moving for the demonstration of proper exercise techniques to members.

 

The incumbent must meet the needs and demands of a diverse group of members including students, faculty, staff and community.

 

Conflict resolution skills and excellent interpersonal skills are required to de-escalate and resolve conflicts between members competing for the use of limited equipment and space

 

The incumbent has the responsibility for program and facility safety while on duty.

 

The incumbent must respond promptly and professionally to all members in a customer service-oriented manner.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  

Completed or pursuing a degree or diploma in PHE, Kinesiology, Physiotherapy or Health Sciences an asset

 

Certifications:

A current WSIB-recognized CPR-C certification within one year of issue;

 

A current WSIB-recognized Standard First Aid certification within three years of issue; and

 

A current personal training certification (NSCA-CSCS or -CPT, CSEP-CPT or -CEP, CPTN-CPT, Canfitpro-PTS or equivalent)

 

The incumbent must maintain all certifications while employed in this position.

 

Experience:

Previous customer service experience and/or experience working in a fitness/athletics facility required. Experience with leading, instructing or mentoring individuals required. Weight training and/or Olympic weightlifting experience strongly preferred. Familiarity with the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education’s programs and services an asset.
